Sunday Serenades: Matinee Performances with Timeless Charm. From the smooth sounds of jazz to the grandeur of Classical Crossovers and Broadway classics, this series invites you to enjoy an afternoon of elegant and exhilarating music.
The Calyx Piano Trio — violinist Catherine French, cellist Jennifer Lucht and pianist Nina Ferrigno — has established itself as one of the most imaginative chamber ensembles on the American scene. Founded in Boston in 2001, the group has earned acclaim for its rich ensemble playing and for its dedication to commissioning and performing new music. It has also been hailed for its long-term artistic leadership at the Missouri Chamber Music Festival and Carolina Chamber Music Festival, part of its ongoing commitment to bring chamber music of depth, imagination and vitality to diverse audiences nationwide.
One of the group’s hallmarks is programming that bridges tradition and innovation — for example, pairing works by Beethoven and Brahms with contemporary voices that challenge and expand the piano trio form. In partnership with Chamber Music America and the Barlow Foundation, Calyx has commissioned and premiered numerous new works written especially for them by such composers as James Lee III, Derek Bermel, Lansing McLoskey, Amy Beth Kirsten, and Florent Ghys, including the recent world premiere of Ghys’s multimedia work Huit Clos in St. Louis. Their performances invite listeners of all backgrounds into a musical dialogue that is welcoming and accessible while offering performances of uncompromising musicianship, virtuosity, and style.
